Depression
In the last few years many physiological problems and diseases appear, the
common one is depression. This article will contain its causes, types, symptoms and
many information about it.
What is depression?
Depression is a feeling of sadness and disappointment that doesn't go away and it
changes the ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and enjoy life. Some people develop
depression after a stressful event in their lives such as the death of a loved one or loss
of a job. Stress can also occur as the result of a more positive event such as getting
married, moving to a new city, or starting a new job because there is a complex
relationship between stressful situations and our mind which leads to a clinical
depression.
Causes:
It is not fully known what exactly causes depression; there is no single cause of it
Early life experience, lifestyle factors, and ongoing medical problems or chronic pain,
all play a part in causing depression. Moreover, something that causes depression in
one person may have no effect on another.
Types of depression:
There are many types of depression; one of them is the major depression which
leads to a sad mood or loss of interest in activities and it keeps people thinking about
themselves and the world in negative ways for at least 2 weeks. However, if it is not
treated, it can last for 6 months or more. Furthermore, Dysthymia is the chronic form
of depression so the people have the depressed mood for at least 2 years. In addition,
the seasonal affective depression which affects people during specific times or
seasons of the year. During the winter months some people feel depressed but during
other months their moods may be normal.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of depression are different from one person to the other, some will
have many symptoms and other will have just a few. Also, the severity of the
symptoms may be different for every person and may change over time. Some of
these symptoms is sadness or empty feelings, decreased energy, oversleeping or
waking much earlier than usual, loss of weight or overeating, feelings of
hopelessness, excessive crying and thoughts of death or suicide.
Depression affects all parts of a person's life. It decreases ability to sleep, eat,
work, and get along with others. It damages the self-confidence and the ability to do
everyday tasks. People who are depressed become tired easily and they cannot get a
good night's sleep. Depression puts a dark cloud over how we see ourselves, the
world, and our future.
Treatment:
There are many different treatments for depression. The most common approach
involves some type of psychotherapy, antidepressant medication, or a combination of
the two. In psychotherapy they identify and change the negative thinking, improve
relationships with others and deal with problems. In addition, Prozac is the most
common prescribed type and this antidepressant typically take up to 4-6 weeks to
reach their full effectiveness.
Finally, now we know many things about this disease causes, affects, symptoms,
types and treatments. I hope that we prevent having this disease by looking to our life
